March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day, a day meant to raise awareness about people living with this disorder and how to better include them in society. The successful Mexican synchronized swimming team “Las Sirenas Especiales”, or The Special Mermaids, was founded in 2009 by psychologist Paloma Torres. Torres started the team as part of her graduate project that focused on people with Down Syndrome in society, but the Peruvian former swimmer decided to continue working with the group when she saw just how amazing they were.
